Water Spots: Why They Won't Wash Off
Those white rings on your paint aren't dirt — they're minerals, and they're actively etching your finish.
What Water Spots Actually Are
When hard water dries on paint, the water evaporates but its dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium — stay behind as deposits. Southern California water is notoriously hard, and sprinkler overspray is the classic culprit: it hits the car, the sun bakes it, and by evening the minerals have bonded.
The Three Stages
- Stage 1 — Surface deposits: fresh minerals sitting on top. Sometimes come off with a proper wash.
- Stage 2 — Bonded deposits: baked on by heat. Washing won't touch them; they need chemical dissolution.
- Stage 3 — Etching: the minerals have eaten into the clear coat itself, leaving crater-like rings that remain even after the mineral is removed. This requires machine polishing to level.
Why Scrubbing Makes It Worse
Mineral deposits are harder than your clear coat. Scrubbing grinds them across the paint — turning a chemical problem into a scratch problem.
How Professional Removal Works
We use dedicated mineral dissolvers that break the deposit's bond chemically, then neutralize the surface. Stage 3 etching gets polished after the minerals are gone. Glass gets its own treatment — those spots on your windshield respond to the same chemistry.
Prevention
Adjust sprinklers away from parking spots, dry the car after rain when you can, and consider a ceramic coating — minerals bond far more weakly to a coated surface.
