Sun Damaged Car Paint — Repair & Prevention

The Southern California sun works on your paint every single day. Here's how to spot the damage, fix it, and stop it from coming back.

Park outside in LA or Orange County and your car takes a beating: UV rays break down the clear coat, colors fade, and the paint turns dull and chalky. The good news — most sun damage can be fixed, and all of it can be slowed down. This guide covers what sun damage looks like, what actually repairs it, and how to protect your paint going forward.

Know The Signs

What Sun Damage Looks Like

Fading

The color looks washed out, especially on the hood, roof, and trunk — the panels that face the sun. Reds and blacks fade fastest.

Oxidation

The paint looks dull, hazy, or chalky. That's the clear coat breaking down. Left alone, it spreads and gets harder to fix.

Clear coat failure

Peeling, flaking, or white patches mean the clear coat is gone in those spots. At this stage, polishing can't bring it back — that panel needs paint.

The Fix

How We Repair Sun Damage

If the clear coat is still intact, paint correction removes the dead, oxidized layer and brings back the color and gloss underneath. Our 1-Step correction ($500–$750) handles light fading and swirl marks. Deeper oxidation calls for a 2-Step correction — we cut first, then polish to a mirror shine.

Prevention

Stop Future Sun Damage

  • Park in shade or a garage whenever you can
  • Wash regularly — baked-on grime speeds up UV damage
  • Keep a wax or paint sealant on the car (included in every wash we do)
  • Best protection: a ceramic coating — it blocks UV for years, not weeks
  • Don't ignore early fading — it's cheapest to fix when it's caught early

Long-Term Protection

Why Ceramic Coating Wins

Wax lasts weeks. A professional ceramic coating lasts years — it's a hard, UV-blocking layer bonded to your paint. The sun's rays hit the coating, not your clear coat. It also makes the car easier to wash and keeps the deep gloss locked in.

Sun Damage FAQ

Can polishing fix faded paint?
If the clear coat is intact, yes — paint correction removes the oxidized layer and restores color and gloss. If the clear coat is peeling or flaking, that panel needs repainting.
How do I know if my clear coat is gone?
White, chalky patches that stay dull after washing, or visible peeling, mean clear coat failure. We inspect on-site and tell you honestly what can be fixed by polishing and what can't.
Does interior sun damage count too?
Yes — UV also fades and cracks dashboards and seats. Interior protectant (included in our interior cleans) slows it down.
What does the repair cost?
1-Step paint correction runs $500–$750 based on vehicle size and condition. We agree on your final price before we start.
